Outer Wilds: £19.99, one expansion and nothing else to buy
A small solar system, a 22-minute loop and a mystery you solve only with what you learn. It took Best Game at the 2020 BAFTAs, and paying for it could not be simpler.

Where to buy Outer Wilds and how to pay
Steam and the PlayStation Store sell Outer Wilds for £19.99; Epic, the Xbox Store and the Nintendo eShop charge £20.99. The Xbox copy is Play Anywhere, so one purchase covers Xbox consoles and Windows, and PS4 owners received the PS5 version free in 2022.
Echoes of the Eye, the only expansion, costs £11.99 on Steam and PlayStation and £12.49 elsewhere. The Archaeologist Edition bundles both: £32.99 on PlayStation, £33.49 on Xbox and £31.99 on Switch, while Steam's bundle price works out at £30.38.

PlayStation Store has Outer Wilds at £11.99 and the Archaeologist Edition at £16.49 until 7 October 2026.
Subscriptions that include it
Outer Wilds used to be in both Game Pass and PlayStation Plus Extra, and many people still assume it is. It left Game Pass at the end of 2022 and PS Plus Extra in March 2024, so today it has to be bought.

What you are paying for
You are the newest astronaut of a small, handmade solar system caught in a 22-minute loop that ends when the sun explodes. Nothing you collect survives a loop; only what you have learned does, recorded in your ship's log. The game is flying, exploring and working out what happened to an ancient people, with no combat at all.
HowLongToBeat players report about 17 hours for the story and 29 to see everything; Echoes of the Eye adds roughly ten more with a noticeably spookier tone. It plays offline, has no difficulty settings to grind through and is verified for Steam Deck.
A note for Switch players
The Switch version works, but Mobius Digital has paused updates for it, and there is no dedicated Switch 2 edition. If you own a PC or another console as well, buy it there.

Questions buyers ask
Is Outer Wilds still in Game Pass?
No. It left Game Pass on 31 December 2022 and PlayStation Plus Extra on 19 March 2024.
Do I need the expansion?
No. The base game is complete. Echoes of the Eye is a second mystery best played after you finish the first.
